Senior Recognitions and Awards
Please note the following descriptions of the Senior Recognitions and Awards:
“PRO DEO ET PATRIA” AWARD
The “Pro Deo et Patria” medal is the highest honor bestowed by the faculty upon the graduating senior who has for the past four years consistently exemplified the spiritual, moral, and intellectual values upon which St. Maria Goretti High School is founded. Pro Deo et Patria, our school motto, translates ‘For God and Country.’ Because of the significance of this honor, the Pro Deo et Patria medal winner is announced at graduation.
STATE AND ARCHDIOCESAN AWARDS
Maryland State Merit Scholastic Award
This award is given in recognition of excellence in scholastic achievement through standardized test scores, cumulative grades, and a rank among the top 5% of the graduating class.
Division of Catholic Schools Distinctive Scholar Recognition
The Archdiocese of Baltimore annually recognizes three students from each of its high schools as Distinguished Scholars for outstanding academic achievement.
Cate Yungwirth Memorial Award
This award is given to a Catholic senior demonstrating integrity, commitment, enthusiasm and a personal standard of excellence with a “can-do” attitude.
Raymond H. Miller, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a senior who will continue on to a Catholic College and has shown strong academic merit during his/her four years at Goretti. The Miller family feels that the following quote should convey the spirit of the award-winner: “One thing I have learned in life is nothing is impossible; it’s just a matter of how hard you are willing to work for it.”
Sister Lynn Tooma SSND Memorial Award
This is the only award voted on by the entire student body and faculty. It is given to a senior who demonstrates enthusiasm, school spirit, and pride for St. Maria Goretti High School through his/her character, participation in extra-curricular activities, and community service.
John H. Munday, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
John H. Munday, Jr. was a beloved science teacher at Goretti for 39 years. His family established the John H. Munday, Jr. Memorial Scholarship to honor his memory and his commitment to helping students prepare for their futures. The scholarship is intended to support young people and recognize their efforts in pursuing academic excellence, challenging themselves, and giving back to the community. The following criteria are required for the scholarship winner:
- Has a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA as of the end of the 1stsemester senior year;
- Has taken AP Calc AB or BC and at least one of the following classes: AP Chemistry or AP Biology;
- Is a member of the 200 Club.
The Eagle of The Cross Award given from The Archdiocese of Baltimore goes to a senior who has been outstanding in Youth Ministry.
The Magis Award, named for the Latin adjective meaning “more,” is awarded by the Campus Ministry Department to a deserving senior.
The 200 Club members are recognized for having completed 200 or more hours of service while attending Goretti, twice the service requirement for graduating seniors.
MSGR. FRANCIS LEARY MEMORIAL AWARD- The Monsignor Leary Award was established in appreciation for and in honor of Msgr. Leary, who was responsible for the building of St. Maria Goretti High School. This award honors the female senior who has achieved scholastic and athletic excellence at St. Maria Goretti High School.
GARY THOMAS ARCIDIACONO MEMORIAL AWARD- Gary Thomas Arcidiacono, a freshman at St. Maria Goretti during the 1966-67 school year, was an outstanding student and showed promise of being a star athlete in baseball and basketball. The Goretti community was shocked by Gary’s untimely death at the age of 14 due to an athletic injury. The faculty and coaches immediately established the “Gary Arcidiacono Memorial Award” to honor the male senior who has achieved scholastic and athletic excellence at St. Maria Goretti High School.
CATHY LEN WIDMYER MEMORIAL AWARD– This award is given in memory of Cathy Widmyer, a 1970 graduate of Goretti. “CL” loved sports and was an avid fitness enthusiast. It is presented to a senior who demonstrates camaraderie and spirit as a member of the team and realizes the benefits of athletics and fitness.
ERNEST J. FENNEL MEMORIAL AWARD- Ernest J. Fennel was an avid supporter of the sports program at St. Maria Goretti High School. Besides being a monetary contributor, he was instrumental in organizing the manpower and equipment necessary to change a vacant lot into what is now our athletic field. The award is given in memory of his efforts and is presented each year to honor a female athlete for outstanding athletic achievement at St. Maria Goretti High School.
RICHARD M. KELLER MEMORIAL AWARD- For many years, Richard Keller was the “Guiding Light” of the athletic program at St. Maria Goretti High School. He was an outstanding athlete and this award is presented in his memory to honor a male athlete for outstanding athletic achievement at St. Maria Goretti High School.
Distinguished Scholar Award is based on GPA and the strong commitment to a life of faith.
Distinguished Scholar Award is based on GPA in a challenging course of study and is awarded to that student who has demonstrated unusual depth and skill in literary analysis, language, and the writing of essays.
English Meritorious Award is based on GPA, and is awarded to that student who has consistently demonstrated excellence and a love of language, literature, and literary analysis throughout his/ her career here at St. Maria Goretti High School.
Distinguished Scholar Award is based on GPA and the number of S.S. courses taken along with the difficulty of the courses chosen and dedication to hard work
Social Studies Meritorious Award is based on GPA and the number of courses that have been taken as well as the outreach this student has done in the field of S.S. and enthusiasm for volunteer work as well.
Distinguished Scholar Award is given to the student with the highest academic average in mathematics over four years.
Math Meritorious Award is given to a student who has shown consistently fine work in mathematics over four years.
Distinguished Scholar Award is given to the student with the highest academic average in science over four years.
Science Meritorious Award is given to a student who has shown consistently an excellence in science over four years.
Distinguished Scholar Award is given to the student with the highest academic average in a foreign language (Spanish, French, Latin) over four years.
Physical Education Awards are given to the boy and girl who do their job/activity without complaining, are team players, and try their hardest, no matter what they are doing
Distinguished Scholar Award is given to the student with the highest academic average in technology.
Two awards are given by the Fine Arts department, the Outstanding Senior Musicianship Award and the Studio Art Award for Excellence.
The Guidance Award for Excellence is given to a student who has demonstrated growth and modeled consistency and maturity in his/her four years at Goretti.
