Mount St. Mary’s University Collaborates with St. Maria Goretti High School

EMMITSBURG, Md. and Hagerstown, Md. (December 6, 2017) – Starting in January 2018, St. Maria Goretti High School (SMGHS) will serve as the first high school in Washington County to collaborate with Mount St. Mary’s University (MSMU) by offering students the opportunity to enroll in collegiate courses such as Sociology and Criminal Justice. This partnership will allow for a select number of qualified seniors to enroll and participate in a college class.

“It is exciting to see a great partnership between the Mount and Goretti. The benefits of this partnership advance our students to the next level in their college career,” said St. Maria Goretti High School President Christopher Cosentino.

“We are excited to begin this partnership with St. Maria Goretti,” said Mount St. Mary’s University President Timothy Trainor, Ph.D. “This program allows the Mount to offer opportunities to provide a values-based education to high school students looking to make a difference.”

SMGHS and MSMU faculty are equally excited about this collaboration. Students not only can learn from college professors, but the professors also are able to work with some of the brightest high school students in the four-state area of Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia.

“Mount St. Mary’s University is delighted to begin this partnership with St. Maria Goretti. Our Mount faculty are looking forward to welcoming these high achieving students to our program,” said Elizabeth Monahan, Director of the Center for Catholic School Excellence and Professional Development School Director.

The course offered by MSMU in the Spring will be an Introduction to Sociology taught by Tim Wolfe, Ph.D. Future courses will be chosen by MSMU and SMGHS faculty and based on the students’ interests. Upon completion and passing of the course, SMGHS students will receive both university and high school credits. Those credits will appear on an MSMU transcript and be sent to the senior’s choice of college upon request. Credits will also appear on the official SMGHS high school transcript.

“This is a great opportunity for our students here at St. Maria Goretti, and we are very appreciative of this partnership. We anticipate this program to grow over the years,” said St. Maria Goretti Principal Bridget Bartholomew.

Students wishing to participate in this optional program must score above 500 on either section of the SAT and obtain Principal Bartholomew’s approval of their course selections. Parental permission to participate is also required.
