St. Maria Goretti High School’s entire student body held a day of reflection and community service on Friday, November 7 to celebrate the upcoming season of thanks. Students in each grade level participated in retreat and service-oriented activities over the course of the day throughout the tri-state area. The mission of the activity was to help people in need, broaden the students’ understanding of faith formation, and emphasize the value in giving back to one’s community.
The freshman class broke into five groups and visited five different locations in the Hagerstown area including Food Resources, the Boys and Girls Club of Washington County, Girls, Inc., Habitat Restore, and Children in Need. The senior class helped organizations in Chambersburg, Pa., Martinsburg, WV, and Frederick, Md. as well as Hagerstown. Meanwhile, the sophomore class traveled to the Baltimore Basilica to build upon the lessons on faith they are learning in religion class, and the junior class held a day of retreat and reflection with the theme, “Making Moral Decisions.”
Later that evening, Goretti hosted a Concert of Celebration and Thanksgiving at the St. Ann Roman Catholic Church in Hagerstown to culminate the day of service. The concert featured Goretti’s student choir, Mount St. Mary’s Gospel Choir, and the student chorus from St. Mary Catholic School in Hagerstown.
