Celebrating Vocations: Meet Father Cibelli!

Father Cibelli joined the St. Mary and Hagerstown community in July of 2016. He grew up in Howard County, Maryland where he attended St. Louis grade school. For high school, he went to Mount St. Joseph in Baltimore (whose team is also the Gaels!). For college he attended Mount St. Mary’s where he studied chemistry, but also discerned his call to the priesthood.

Father Cibelli heard the call to the priesthood because of the example of the priests in the parish where he grew up, St. Louis in Clarksville. His parents always assured him that they would love him no matter what his calling was which gave him the freedom to respond to God’s call. In high school he realized that he was thinking about the priesthood and liked the idea, and while at Mount St. Mary’s, thanks to the support of his friends and the example of some of the seminarians, he was ready to take the next step and enter seminary.

After finishing his time at Mount St. Mary’s he was assigned to the North American College in Rome for seminary where he spent five years. He was ordained a priest in 2009, and coming home from Rome, he served as associate pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Cockeysville, Maryland. From 2013-2015 he served as priest-secretary to Cardinal O’Brien while in Rome. That is when he started his doctoral studies, which, God-willing, are nearly finished!

Father Cibelli loves being at St. Mary’s and Hagerstown in general. He looks forward to his frequent visits to St. Maria Goretti!
