Alumni News & Highlights – “It’s a Great Day to be a Gael!”
Welcome to this page dedicated to sharing the stories and experiences of St. Maria Goretti High School alumni. We are proud of all that our alums continue to accomplish in their local communities, throughout the nation, and across the globe.
Class of 2013: Jessica Swarner
Thank you to Jessica Swarner, Goretti class of 2013, for being the guest alumni speaker at the Junior Ring Day Mass and Ceremony on January 6, 2017. She currently attends Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University, where she received a full-ride scholarship. She has studied and worked in cyberpsychology and cybersecurity labs over the past three years, and interned with the Arizona Public Interest Research Group researching public transit. Last year, she spent a semester in Washington, D.C. reporting on sustainability issues for the Washington Monthly magazine.
“I can tell you that if you put in the work to step out of your comfort zone and ask yourself what you really want to do, what you really dream of doing, you can do that in college, no matter where you go, no matter if you haven’t figured it out just yet,” Swarner said. “I’m so happy to be back at Goretti, and I’m so happy for you – the junior class because I know you will all do some amazing things.”

Class of 1983
Thank you to Dave Gruver, Goretti class of ’83, for sharing his memories and experience at Goretti in the Summer 2015 issue of WV Executive. Dave is the National Sales Director for UGG Australia, and took the time to return to Goretti last fall to speak to students at the 2014 Fall Honors Assembly.
“Just as important to Gruver is St. Maria Goretti High School, the private school in Hagerstown, MD, where he received his high school diploma. “My four years at Goretti was probably the most influential period in my life,” he says. “The influence of the teachers and that community will be everlasting. It was the perfect mix of faculty, family and religious and spiritual support that allowed me to really grow in that period of my life.”

Class of 2000
Goretti alum Dr. Sarah Phillips recently shared with the Martinsburg Journal what Goretti meant to her and how it helped shape her life and career.
“The knowledge, discipline, and guidance that I received during my four years at St. Maria Goretti provided me with a strong
academic foundation. On this foundation, I was able to build my medical career. Throughout my academic journey, I have always felt prepared as a learner. I am grateful for the fundamentals that St. Maria Goretti instilled in me, assisting me in becoming a successful professional in this community.”
