Boy’s basketball team visits NYC

The boys basketball team played in the ‘Big Apple Classic’ in New York City in January. Goretti alum Dave Gruver ’83 hosted the Gaels at the UGG Austalia corporate office on 5th Avenue (pictured below). Despite a close loss to New York City power St. Raymond’s from The Bronx, a great time was had by all.

Scoreboard Dedicated To Kim Kell

The scoreboard on the athletic field at Goretti was recently dedicated in honor of longtime teacher and coach Kim Kell. During the ceremony on Homecoming Weekend, Mr. Kell was recognized for all that he has given to Goretti. Since the mid-1970′s, Mr. Kell has filled many roles on campus, from teacher to baseball coach and many, many more.

Philosophy

Athletics are a vital part of the total curriculum at St. Maria Goretti High School. As an extension of the academic classroom and traditional school day, many valuable lessons are learned through athletic participation. The objective of athletics is to foster an environment where young people reach their fullest potential intellectually, emotionally and physically.

Goretti encourages students to vary their athletic experiences in order to enhance the diversity of learning. Goretti athletics are dedicated to teaching the principles of participation, excellence, discipline, loyalty, self-confidence, dealing with success and failure, respect for authority and getting along with others.

Good sportsmanship, displayed by participants and fans alike, is highly valued and an expectation at Goretti. The manner in which teams win or lose reflects the values the school holds most closely.
