Goretti to join newly formed IPSL St. Maria Goretti (Hagerstown, MD), St. James School (Hagerstown, MD), St. John’s Catholic Prep (Frederick, MD), the Maryland School for the Deaf (Frederick, MD), and Mercersburg Academy (Mercersburg, PA) are pleased to announce the formation of the Independent-Parochial School League (IPSL), an interscholastic athletics organization comprised of the Tri-State area’s Catholic and independent schools.
The Independent-Parochial School League unites regional independent and parochial schools that share the objective of fostering good, meaningful competition with a healthy approach that balances the values of sportsmanship and healthy rivalries. The IPSL embraces cohesive cooperation that does not infringe on the autonomy of each school and that does not create conflicts with other organizations with which member schools are aligned.
Goretti will compete in soccer, golf, cross country, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, tennis and lacrosse beginning in the 2011-2012 school year.
Philosophy
Athletics are a vital part of the total curriculum at St. Maria Goretti High School. As an extension of the academic classroom and traditional school day, many valuable lessons are learned through athletic participation. The objective of athletics is to foster an environment where young people reach their fullest potential intellectually, emotionally and physically.
Goretti encourages students to vary their athletic experiences in order to enhance the diversity of learning. Goretti athletics are dedicated to teaching the principles of participation, excellence, discipline, loyalty, self-confidence, dealing with success and failure, respect for authority and getting along with others.
Good sportsmanship, displayed by participants and fans alike, is highly valued and an expectation at Goretti. The manner in which teams win or lose reflects the values the school holds most closely.
